Why do we need to raise money?
The battle to stop the "Big Box" store from being built will be won on
our ability to make a strong case to the governmental bodies processing
the development application. That case will be highly technical in
nature and involve the analysis of land use laws, zoning, traffic
analysis, and other technical criteria. In communities that have
defeated a "Big Box" store, they generally hire two experts: a land use
attorney and a traffic engineer.
These experts will help navigate and guide us through the regulations
and paperwork. They will present data and arguments in our favor, as
well as provide counter-arguments to the information presented by the
developer and their experts. Our land use attorney and traffic engineer
will help provide focus and direction to our volunteer efforts, foster
efficiency, and help us maximize our efforts within the limited time
frame of this project. These experts are our best hope of stopping the
"Big Box" store from being built.
How much will it cost?
We estimate that it will cost up to $25,000 to get through the first
round of appeals to the Portland City Council. More money would be
needed for the appeal to the Land Use Board of Appeals (LUBA) and
potentially to the Oregon Court of Appeals. To raise this sum, Save
Madison South asks for donations from its membership base and from the
local business community.
How much of my donation goes to overhead?
All of our officers, directors, and committee chairs are volunteers and
are not paid for their time and effort. Nearly all of the money raised
is earmarked to pay for our consultants (primarily, our land use
attorney and our traffic engineer). We also use funds to print
materials and do direct mailings on rare occasions. Save Madison South
has no administrative expenses and no "overhead." Every dollar goes
towards developing community awareness and towards our consultant
team.
Is my donation tax deductible?
Unfortunately no. It is for a good cause though.
Will my donation and name be kept confidential?
Our supporter list is strictly private. It will not be shared with any
third party. If you choose to donate to Save Madison South, you will
never be contacted by a third-party. Please be assured that your personal information and donation amounts are kept
confidential, unless otherwise specified.
